More US Auto & Home Insurance Companies That May Have Low Rates For You

Updated: March 2023

Using my shopping guides show you most of the companies offering auto & home insurance in your state, but there are still more companies that may be available to you. It is wise to shop with as many companies as possible if you really want to find the company saving you the most money on the coverage you need. Learn about the companies I list below and decide if you should check their rates. In my own personal experience, I have been able to save a lot of money with lesser-known companies. Some of these companies are newer companies using innovative technology claiming to offer lower rates.

Here is why you should bookmark this web page:

Technology is starting to transform the auto and home insurance industry with new companies entering the market each year. I will continue to add more companies to this list as I become aware of them and they become widely available.

Will you be eligible for all these auto and home insurance companies?

As I mention in my auto & home insurance shopping guides for each US state, insurance companies have different eligibility criteria, so not everyone may qualify for all the companies I list below or they may not be available in your state yet. However, everyone can benefit by shopping, even if they have recent claims or other factors making them ineligible for some companies. If you do not qualify for a particular company that is available in your state, ask the company or agent what needs to change about your situation for you to qualify, so you can check again if you expect to meet their qualification standards in the future.

Here are additional auto and home insurance companies you may or may not know, listed in alphabetical order:

1. American National Property & Casualty Company

American National Property & Casualty Company (ANPAC) sells auto, residential property, and life insurance through its own group of American National agents and is available in most US states, but Wyoming is the only state where it has a large share of the auto and home insurance market. You may or may not have seen American National agencies located in communities in your state, as American National agencies are not as common or widespread as Allstate, Farmers, or State Farm agencies.

The 2019-2021 auto and home insurance complaint record for American National Property & Casualty is not consistently better than the industry average. If American National has the coverage you need at a competitive price, be sure to choose a good agent willing & able to help if you have a problem with a claim or other service issue.

Check out the American National website I link here to learn more about the company and to see if there are American National agents in your state:

2. Amica Insurance

Amica sells auto, residential property, and life insurance direct from the company and is available in most US states, but it has a large share of the auto and home insurance market only in a few US states. You may or may not have seen ads for Amica on TV or other media, as it does not advertise as much as its largest competitors, like Allstate, GEICO, Progressive, and State Farm.

In spite of a long history of performing well in annual JD Power insurance customer satisfaction studies, the 2019-2021 auto and home insurance complaint record for Amica is not consistently better than the industry average. I would not choose Amica unless it has the best price for the coverage you need, and you decide the lower cost is worth the risk of poor service and claims problems. You can click this link to see Amica Insurance customer reviews at the Yelp website.

The only way to get a price quote from Amica is by calling the company or through its website. Check out the Amica website I link here to learn more about the company and get a price quote:

3. Branch Insurance

Headquartered in Columbus, OH and founded in 2017, Branch Insurance is an insurance agency representing Branch Insurance Exchange, General Security National Insurance Company, and Everspan Insurance Company. Branch sells auto and residential property insurance direct and though select independent agents. Branch Insurance is available now in 37 US states with plans to expand to more states, but as a newer company, does not have a large share of the auto and home insurance market in any state yet.

The 2022 auto and home insurance complaint record for Branch Insurance Exchange, General Security National Insurance Company, and Everspan Insurance Company is not better than the industry average. If Branch has the coverage you need at a competitive price, try to buy it from a good independent insurance agent willing & able to help if you have a problem with a claim or other service issue.

Branch Insurance promises fast price quotes through its website. Check out the Branch website I link here to learn more about the company and get a price quote:

4. Clearcover Insurance

Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Chicago, IL., Clearcover is a digital insurer offering auto insurance only through its website and mobile application. Clearcover is available in 26 US states and is continuing to expand to additional states. As of 2022, most Clearcover auto insurance customers are Texas residents.

Clearcover has a large discount for military members and offers optional coverage for rideshare (Lyft / Uber) drivers.

The 2021-2022 auto insurance complaint record for Clearcover Insurance Company is consistently worse than the industry average. You may want to consider choosing Clearcover only if it offers the coverage you need at a price much lower than other companies.

Although Clearcover is available through a small group of select independent insurance agents, you may have a hard time finding any independent agents licensed in your state representing Clearcover. For now, get a price quote through the Clearcover website. If Clearcover has the best price for the coverage you need, call Clearcover to see if there are any Clearcover agents in your state you can contact to buy a policy. It is always best to have an agent to help you if you have a claims or service problem.

5. Connect powered by American Family

Connect sells auto and residential property insurance direct from the company and is available in most US states, but California is the only state where it has a large share of the auto and home insurance market. Connect was formerly called Ameriprise and was rebranded when it was purchased by American Family in 2019. Connect (like Ameriprise before its renaming) has a marketing relationship with Costco and offers a discount to Costco members. If you shop at Costco, you may be aware of Connect, but you do not need to be a Costco member to qualify for its insurance. Connect, unlike American Family, does not have agents.

Unlike American Family Insurance, the 2019-2021 auto and home insurance complaint record for Connect (which operates separately as its own brand) is consistently worse than the industry average. Since you will not have an agent to help you, I would not choose Connect unless it has the best price for the coverage you need, and you decide the lower cost is worth the risk of poor service and claims problems.

You can get a price quote from Connect by calling the company or through its website. Check out the Connect website I link here to learn more about the company and get a price quote:

6. Hippo Insurance

Headquartered in Palo Alto, CA and founded in 2015, Hippo Insurance is an online insurance agency selling Hippo Home Insurance underwritten by various companies, but mainly Spinnaker Insurance Company. Hippo promises to offer quick online price quotes and specializes in modern homes having or willing to adopt smart home devices, such as leak sensors. Hippo does not sell car insurance. Hippo insurance sells direct to the public through its website and though select independent agents. Hippo Insurance is available now in 41 US states with plans to expand to more states, but as a newer company, does not have a large share of the home insurance market in any state yet.

The 2022 home insurance complaint record for Spinnaker Insurance Company is not better than the industry average. If Hippo has the coverage you need at a competitive price, try to buy it from a good independent insurance agent willing & able to help if you have a problem with a claim or other service issue.

Hippo Insurance promises fast price quotes through its website. Check out the Hippo website I link here to learn more about the company (be sure to read through the FAQS before buying) and get a price quote:

7. Homeowners of America Insurance Company

Established in 2006 and headquartered in Irving, TX, Homeowners of America Insurance Company sells residential property insurance through a small, select group of independent insurance agents in a growing number of US states. Homeowners of America does not offer auto insurance.

Where I was able to find agents located in the state, I included Homeowners of America in my state shopping guides. However, Homeowners of America is available in other states through a couple of large, out-of-state agencies licensed & appointed to represent Homeowners of America in multiple states. Homeowners in these states may want to contact these agents to see if Homeowners of America is a good choice to insure their homes.

The 2019-2021 home insurance complaint record for Homeowners of America Insurance Company is consistently better than the industry average. If you choose a good agent, you are likely to be happy with its claims and customer service.

8. Lemonade Insurance

Founded in 2015 and headquartered in New York City, NY, Lemonade Insurance is a rapidly expanding online insurance company now operating in 38 states, primarily offering residential property (renters, condo, homeowners) insurance. Lemonade Insurance is available online or through its mobile application only. Lemonade acquired Metromile Insurance, a pay per mile auto insurance company, in 2022.

The 2019-2022 home insurance complaint record for Lemonade Insurance Company is not consistently better than the industry average. Since you will not have an agent to help you, I would not choose Lemonade unless it has a much lower price than other companies for the coverage you need, and you decide the lower cost is worth the risk of poor service and claims problems you will have to handle on your own.

You can learn more about Lemonade Insurance and get a price quote at its website I link here:

https://www.lemonade.com/

9. Metromile Insurance

Founded in 2011 and headquartered in San Francisco, CA, Metromile auto insurance offers pay-per-mile auto insurance and is available in 8 US states -- but may be expanding rapidly to other states through Lemonade Insurance, which acquired Metromile in 2022. Like other usage-based auto insurance, you download the Metromile mobile application and Metromile monitors your driving for a trial period to offer you a price quote.

The 2019-2021 auto insurance complaint record for Metromile Insurance Company is consistently much worse than the industry average. Since you will not have an agent to help you, I would not choose Metromile unless it has a much lower price than other companies for the coverage you need, and you decide the lower cost is worth the risk of poor service and claims problems you will have to handle on your own.

If you are a low-mileage driver, you are okay with having your driving habits monitored, and you are willing to choose a company with a poor complaint record if it can save you the most money, you can learn more about Metromile Insurance at its website I link here:

https://www.metromile.com/

10. Openly Insurance

Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Boston, MA, Openly Insurance sells residential property insurance, underwritten by Rock Ridge Insurance Company, through a select group of independent insurance agents in 21 US states and is rapidly expanding to additional states. Openly does not offer auto insurance.

The 2019-2021 home insurance complaint record for Rock Ridge Insurance Company is consistently better than the industry average. If you choose a good agent, you are likely to be happy with its claims and customer service.

11. Root Insurance

Founded in 2015 and headquartered in Columbus, OH, Root Insurance offers usage-based auto insurance (except in states not allowing usage-based rates, such as California, where Root auto insurance is available) in 34 US states. To get an auto insurance price quote from Root, you need to download its app to your smart phone. If you qualify, after Root monitors your driving habits during a test drive period, Root will give you a price quote. Root offers auto insurance quotes only to drivers it determines to be safe drivers. In a few states, Root offers renters insurance. Root also offers homeowners insurance through a partnership with Homesite Insurance in some states. Root has a relationship with Carvana to include its auto insurance as an option when you buy a car through Carvana.

The 2019-2021 auto insurance complaint record for Root Insurance Company is consistently much worse than the industry average. Since you will not have an agent to help you, I would not choose Root unless it has a much lower price than other companies for the coverage you need, and you decide the lower cost is worth the risk of poor service and claims problems you will have to handle on your own.

If you consider yourself a safe driver, you are okay with having your driving habits monitored, and you are willing to choose a company with a poor complaint record if it can save you the most money, you can learn more about Root Insurance at its website I link here:
